About our clubs   What do participants do?

The Storming Robots RoboClub is a weekly forum for those who are interested in pursuing robotics projects.

Groups Grade Levels Meeting hours / week
MicRoBotics (sm) 3rd 1.5hr
Stormbotics 1 (sm) 4th - 6th 2hr
Stormbotics 2 (sm) 6th - 8th 2hr
RoboSoccer 8th & up 2hr

*** MicroBotics club: We may consider 2nd grader for this group if the child demonstrates minimum 3rd grade level of math, reading and writing.  Please contact the Director if you wish your 2nd grade child to participate.

We allocate maximum of only 8 children in one session. Sign up early to secure your selected date and time most convenient to you.

All students MUST keep a technical journal for each class. All projects will involve not only building robots from scratch with Mindstorms, but heavily in programming to automate robots.

  • Build robots from scratch with Mindstorms materials.
  • Are involved in hands-on, challenging and engaging fun projects via engineering process.
  • Learn programming language with exposure to the computer science.
  • Write programs on a PC to automate their robots.
  • Learn engineering tips, fundamental mechanic,  and programming.
  • Involve in problems solving every class via fun with robots. Therefore, students often work hard without even noticing it.
  • Keep a journal to record technical details that they have learned and explored in each class.
  • Will  often work as a supportive member of a team.
  • Participate in both teamwork as well as individual work.
  • Participate in periodical presentation and mini-contest as a form of assessment for every completed project.
  • Periodically do self-assessment with instructor.

Presentation per trimester   Opportunity to join our competitive team
We not only periodically hold friendly robotics contests among club members during a term. At the end of each trimester, parents will be invited in to watch their presentation or mini-contest. Students also engage in robotics projects which require teamwork. They collaborate with one another to complete a larger set of challenges.

We continuously explore more learning opportunities. For example, we closely monitor NASA Educator/Robotics projects, and participate in online competition if available.

FIRST LEGO League State Tournament: In the early Fall trimester, we ask for six to eight experienced members to participate our competitive team in the FIRST LEGO League Annual State Tournament.  Participation in the State Tournament is  not guaranteed. If there are over-whelming number of volunteers, Storming Robots will select students based on the following criteria:
  • tenure in our club
  • technical experience
  • maturity to stay on task
  • willingness to commit their time

RoboCup Junior Exhibition/Contest: This group of club members will explore the opportunity in taking part in a RoboCup Junior Exhibition/ competition held in New Jersey sometime in late Spring at the Bloomfield College.

Networked Computer Lab

  Independent Projects

Our networked computers lab contains a multitude of programming environments to choose from, including a sophisticated, but intuitive graphical interfaced programming language, and different flavors of C compilers for the RCX and NXT platforms.

Internet access is facilitated for accessing educational and teaching resources only.

If the child is more technical inclined and loves to pursue private project at home; but it is difficult for them to commute to the center weekly,  he/she can arrange an independent study with the instructor.  Please contact the director for details.

Educational Values Highlight    Communication with parents

  • Strengthen process of thinking in engineering.
  • Encourage knowledge exchange in the realm of  robotics.
  • Meet others who have similar interests and caliber.
  • Allow you to create autonomous robots and compete.
  • Become a natural problem solver, "Outside the Box" thinker.
  • Learn to evaluate his/her own performance.
  • Build a life-time learner.
  • Build the capability of pursuing self-directed projects.
  • Strengthen the ability as a team player.
Parents will receive progress report every term.  There is a mandatory technical presentation or mini-contest at the last meeting of each trimester.  This is a form of assessment on students' learning progress.

We also anticipate in organizing newsletter for our roboclub in the future.  The participation is entirely voluntary.
